Sleep Apnea Appliances

Spring Hill Dental Center offers custom sleep guards to reduce the effects of sleep apnea for patients who don't respond well to standard sleep apnea treatments.
Snoring can be irritating – especially for those within earshot – but it could also be a sign of a more dangerous condition, Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Snoring is simply caused by the vibration of soft tissue in the throat as we breathe. Sleep apnea, on the other hand, refers to experiencing a complete blockage of the airway for 10 seconds or longer as we sleep and it may occur hundreds of times per night. This condition can increase our risk for stroke, heart attack, daytime fatigue, among other health issues.

How we can help: Although sleep apnea is not in itself a dental condition, your dentist may have a solution to bring you relief. Your first course of action will be to have a sleep study and an official diagnosis from a sleep physician (we can recommend reliable facilities). They may recommend a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) appliance which is the go-to therapy for severe sleep apnea. Many people find, however, that the device may not work for them due to claustrophobia, poor fit, or general discomfort – all of which can interfere with a good night’s sleep. If this is the case, then your dentist may be able to help with a less-invasive alternative: a sleep guard. A sleep guard will hold your lower jaw slightly forward, which then prevents the airflow blockage. Many patients find this the more comfortable option.
